Emilia Perez does it deserve the 13 Oscar nominations?
a film with a lack of Research and poor Representation,
The Oscar nominations has been released and one film on there I felt like it wasn’t worthy of being nominated. That film was Emilia Perez which walked away with 13 academy award nominations but myself and a lot of different people felt like that this film was not worthy of the praise that its getting with these awards. In this post I’m going to talk about why this film is bad and how the director failed to create a film that is on the same level as Oppenheimer (2023)
What nominations did it get?
Emilia Perez earnt 13 nominations in the academy award 2 of them being best motion picture. However it also got nominated for 11 Baftas and 10 golden globe nominations. It took 4 of those golden globes home one being best musical or comedy film. I believe that this is unworthy as it was up against some powerhouses: The Substance, Anora, A real pain, Challengers and wicked.
What did it snub?
One of the major snubs which has the whole film community in up roar is the snub of challengers in the best score category. This is extremely disappointing because having watched both and Challengers score is so much better than Emilia Perez. It also snubbed Kneecap in the best international picture. However I think they did not nominate Kneecap in fear that the band spoke out during the awards. But it still was snubbed wrongfully. It also snubbed two films either one I would be happy taking its place in the best picture category and that is Sing Sing and A real pain.
Community reactions
I’ve read multiple reviews from both sides of the spectrum, I’ve seen people say that this is not a good representation of their culture and that it is lazy writing however I’ve also seen people say that it is good representation. Now that’s just how Mexican people have reacted to this film but what does Trans people think of this film. I’ve read and talked to people about how they feel that this film has represented them and multiple have said that this was not how they want to be represented. The song La Vaginoplastia is poor representation according to Trans people.
Overall this film is a poor and lazy film which lacks any kind of research by the director and in light of Karla Sofia Gascons recent controversy it is a shame that a historic nomination for Trans people has a poor first. However this is not an excuse to be transphobic to a community for one persons mistake. I would recommend going and forming your own opinions on this film.
